Frequently Asked Questions
Here are a few things to consider before choosing natural stone.
Can I use marble in my kitchen?
You can choose marble for your kitchen counters, but in all honesty, it isn’t the best option. To avoid stains, scratches, and scuffs, you’ll have to thoroughly understand and rigorously apply the maintenance tips. Talk to our advisors.
I’m building a house. When should I choose the stone I want to install?
The color and grooves of stone can vary from one shipment to the next, so it’s a good idea to wait until the room is three or four weeks from being finalized before choosing the stone. At that point, you’ll be able to choose from what’s currently available.
Will my granite or quartz work surface have visible joints?
Not necessarily. Stone blocks usually measure between 7 and 10 feet, so your work surface may require no more than one joint. Many people don’t mind visible joints, but if you have any questions on this subject, talk to one or our advisors before your work surface is cut. You can also discuss the location and appearance of the joints at the same time. Remember that the joints are so tight, they’re practically invisibles. But be sure the check beforehand anyway, to make sure you’re fully satisfied with the final product.
Should I choose an undermount or an overmount sink for my granite countertop?
This is a simple matter of personal preference. When properly installed, both types of sink are safe and hygienic. Undermount sinks are a popular option because in addition to looking good, they make it easy to clean the countertop and allow water to drain directly into the sink. This type of installation is slightly more expensive, however, because the sink surrounds have to be finished.
Is granite more expensive than quartz?
It all depends on the granite you choose. Availability, color, and country of origin will all affect the price. Stone that is difficult to procure and in high demand will definitely cost more. The price of granite will also vary according to its country of origin. However, a wide range of granite colors are available at prices that are comparable to, and sometimes for less than quartz.
Is granite too heavy for my bathroom cabinet? Should I add support?
A 3-centimeter thick slab of granite weighs about 19 pounds (8.6 kg) per square foot. Standard cabinets should be able to bear that weight easily. However, if your cabinets can’t support the weight, our Summum Granit professionals can provide solid advice.
Will the block of stone I receive be like the sample?
Because the pattern and grooves of natural stone can vary, it’s hard to rely on a single representative sample. Also, stone varies from one shipment to the next. If you have a sample from a previous shipment, the actual stone you receive may look different. Talk to our Summum Granit specialists to see what’s available before making your final decision.
Can different colors of stone be combined in the same piece?
Absolutely! In fact, it’s even quite common to combine different types of stone in the same room. Just be sure to check the maintenance requirements and durability of each type of stone.
Should I approve the shipment of granite before it is cut?
